Martin began playing the cornet at the age of 7 with the William Rhodes School Band in his home town of Chesterfield in Derbyshire. In 1979, the school band formed Rhodian Brass, a contesting band that climbed through the sections to achieve Championship status by 1985. Martin was Principal Cornet at this time, during which the band won 4th Section and 2nd Section National Titles!
Martin continued on the front row at Rhodian until 2000, participating in 4 visits to each of the National Championship Finals, British Open and All England Masters. After a short spell with Ransomes, Martin took a sabbatical for three years before joining Thoresby Colliery Band on the back row in 2004.
He joined Carlton Main in February 2007.
